Breastfeeding may be more time consuming than bottle feeding, however it has many benefits for the child and the mother. Not every mother is suited to breastfeeding however even if you just do it for the first month it still will provide considerable benefits to the mother and baby.
Here are some advantages for breastfeeding your child:-
1. It provides protection against infections including insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, allergic disease, ear infections, urinary tract infections, necrotising enterocolitis, and respiratory infections.
2. Women benefit from breastfeeding as well! Studies show that women are less at risk of the following, hip fractures and bone density, ovarian cancer, breast cancer. It also helps to lose that extra baby weight gained by the mother during pregnancy!
3. Some studies also suggest babies have better neurological development. This however is difficult to prove as there are so many factors in a baby’s development.
4. Breastfeeding and Asthma – breastfeeding your baby can help protect against asthma. This includes even when other major factors are taken into account, history of asthma in the family, gender, born prematurely, or exposure to cigarette smoke. Breastfeeding your baby also prevents them from developing any allergies you may have.
5. Studies suggest that breastfeeding can reduce the chance of obesity. This in turn helps lower the risk of contracting related diseases like diabetes.
6. It helps develop that mother and baby bond and ensures maximum skin to skin to contact during those precious first few months.
